What Is The Driver Responsibility Assessment?

The Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA) was implemented in New York with the goal of improving motor vehicle safety while also deterring and discouraging repeat violations. This program applies to all drivers within the State of New York regardless of the driver’s state of licensure. The DRA is a monetary penalty that must be paid annually for three years following a traffic conviction. This fine is in addition to any other fines or penalties imposed as a result of the violation. The DRA is imposed if:

  • You are convicted of an alcohol-related traffic violation
  • You are convicted of a drug-related traffic violation
  • You refuse a chemical test
  • You receive six or more points on your driving record with an 18-month period

The amount of DRA fine you are required to pay depends on the type of traffic conviction you incur. If you are convicted of a drug or alcohol-related offense or refuse a chemical test, you will be required to pay $250 annually for three years. If you acquire six points on your record, you must pay $100 each year for three years. If you receive more than six points, your fine will be increased for each additional point. Points are applied to your driving record for traffic violations that occur in New York, Ontario and Quebec.

Traffic violations impose significant financial obstacles that can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars if ignored or handled improperly. Our team understands New York traffic laws inside and out and we work hard to get you the outcome you desire.
